Prevention is the Cure
UPdate Fall 2001

Women in Huntington, New York marked Breast Cancer Month with a difference this year.  Their pink ribbons proclaimed "Prevention is the Cure."  And their Walk for Prevention focused on measures that could prevent people from needing a cure, such as reducing the environmental toxins found in pesticides and some plastics.

"The old pink ribbon is a hope for the future, said Laura Weinberg, co-president of the Great Neck Breast Cancer Action Coalition. "This pink ribbon is saying there is something we can do today."

State Senator Carl Marcellino, Huntington Town Supervisor Frank Petrone and local county legislators echoed the prevention message after the race. They pointed to Suffolk County's no-spray pesticide list and Huntington Town's ban of pesticides on municipal golf courses as examples of measures governments can take.
